DC Action for Children
Decoding Dyslexia
Decoding Dyslexia – DC is a grassroots movement driven by DC families concerned about the limited access to educational interventions for students with dyslexia and other reading difficulties within our schools. We aim to raise awareness and empower families to support their children. We also want to inform policy-makers on best practices for screening, identifying, remediating, and supporting students with dyslexia and reading difficulties in DC.
EmpowerEd
EmpowerEd’s mission is to bring about a more just and equitable education system for all DC students by centering the voices and ideas of diverse educators and creating a culture of shared leadership that retains excellent educators.
PAVE
Founded in April 2016 with an all-parent governing board, PAVE is dedicated to creating an environment where the vision for education in DC is created with children and families, not for them. We aim to shift the dynamic so that communities and parents are partners in creating great schools.
Youth Advocacy Groups
Mikva Challenge
Modeled after the successful civic engagement programming
developed for youth in Chicago, Mikva DC began as a small pilot program, working with 200 students at four schools in 2014-15. Today, we are making a real citywide impact, reaching over 1500 local students at more than 30 schools across our city and have expanded our reach by 650% since our pilot year. Through our partnerships with classroom teachers, we integrate action civics into students’ classroom experiences, and provide opportunities for students to engage in real-life democratic experiences outside of the classroom, through our Student Voice, Elections in Action and Summer Fellowship programs.
Black Swan Academy
The Black Swan Academy empowers black youth in under-served communities through civic leadership and engagement, giving them a comprehensive set of tools needed to succeed in life and become active social catalyst in their communities. We are committed to creating a pipeline of Black youth leaders that are committed to improving self, as well as their communities.
